Hi. I need some information on how to start an apprenticeship as an electrician at the age of 29! Can anyone help???? I am a time served joiner by trade but would like to do something different.

I dont think at your age you would be able to do an apprenticeship, as they are only for ages 16-24. Your only option is to take a sole electricians course. I know this as my childs father is 30 and wanted to do the same thing. There is no funding for the ver 24s unless you are already employed in the feild and your company are willing to sponser you.

I know it is not needed but it would be very helpful. If any one has a favorite then please let me know!

Since this is a special tool, it is whatever the company provides. By our contract, it is not part of my tool list.

If it decreases job for electricians, what jobs does it help to increase?
I’m planning to go to college but I don’t know what major is the best for me.

I don’t believe it decreases jobs for electricians unless there is a difference between electricians and electronic engineers. Electronics is an ever expanding field whereas more things are controlled by electronics everyday than the way they used to be. People with electrical experience are still needed to set up wireless components.

I am lookingat starting a small handyman buisness and am wondering if i need a electricians license
to do small home repair, and or telephone repairs?

Here is the issue: If you do repairs that involve the main household electrical system, you now have liability for that work. And if there should be a problem with it and you are sued, that you do not have a license will open you up to all kinds of repercussions.

Low-voltage wiring does not require a license in most locations (in the US), so telephone and data work is fine. But you will still have to follow the codes in that work – and any other work that you do.

Many townships and municipalities require a contractor’s license and contractor’s insurance for any work done in their area.

And you really need insurance to do this kind of work anyway. Don’t try to fly under the radar – the potential for nasty consequences is significant both for you and your customers.

Just as a piece of advice, the overhead for many small contractors for "soft" costs (insurance, licenses, taxes, and so forth) often exceeds 20% of the total cash-flow of the business including rent, utilities, vehicles, tooks, wages and salaries. This is not insignificant. Naturally, as the business grows, the proportion dedicated to soft costs does go down – but the actual costs do not.
